Newport Volunteer Oppertunites Tranquil Gardens (Newport) – is seeking volunteers for the following positions:
Island Pond Public Library (Island Pond) – is seeking volunteers for simple administrative duties like checking books in and out. No experience necessary…will train and schedule hours for volunteers’ convenience. VT Dept. of Health (Newport) – is seeking a volunteer to take calls and perform simple administrative duties for a 4 hour period once each month during their staff meeting. No experience necessary…will train. St. Paul’s School (Barton, VT) – is seeking volunteers to assist with an After-School Program for children aged 4-9 years. Program runs weekdays from 2:20P until 5:30P and can involve as many as 10 students. Volunteers are always accompanied by the School Coordinator and a staff person. Training & background check provided. Newport Community Justice Center (NCJC-Newport) – is seeking volunteers to serve on its Reparative Board, which consists of 4 to 6 community members. Volunteers are trained to conduct a structured problem-solving meeting with persons responsible for and affected by crime. The meeting focuses on understanding the harm caused, how the responsible party will make amends, and what actions the responsible party will take to avoid re-offending. This is a great opportunity to get involved in and contribute to your community. Newport Health Care & Rehab Center (Newport) – is seeking a volunteer to lead a men’s group by asking local speakers to attend and discuss hunting, fishing, sports and other subjects of interest. No experience necessary but should be a people-person. Up-East Chamber of Commerce (Derby) – is seeking volunteers for office/informational tasks at the Chamber office in the old State Police Barracks. Shifts should start in April and will be arranged to meet volunteer personal schedules. Island Pond Welcome Center (Island Pond) – is seeking volunteers to work 3 or 4 hour shifts to answer questions and assist travelers find their way in northern VT & NH. Basic computer experience is desirable, but not necessary as staff will train. This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers of all ages to get involved in a new venture. Information Booth (Newport) – The North Country Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers to work shifts Monday through Friday both summer and winter. There are 3-hour shifts covering 10A-3P in the winter, and 4-hour shifts covering 9A-4:30P in the summer. Old Stone House Museum (Brownington) – is seeking volunteers for its summer season to act as Tour Guides and to be sales people in the Gift Shop. No experience necessary – will train. EVERYBODY WINS (Barton) - is seeking volunteers to participate in a children’s literacy program in the school. Volunteers must agree to remain with the program for the school year and time commitment is only for one hour during lunchtime on Thursdays. Volunteers will work with the on-site EW School Coordinator. OSHER (Newport-Derby) – is seeking volunteers of all sorts, so if interested in being part of a very worthwhile lecture series sponsored by UVM, please consider this. Everyone welcome and no special skills needed. Goodrich Memorial Library (Newport) – is seeking volunteers with a flexible schedule to perform administrative duties. No experience necessary as the library will provide training. Orleans Family Court (Newport) – is seeking volunteers to serve with the Guardian ad Litem Program (GAL) to ensure that every child appearing before a court has a well-trained, impartial, supervised and supported person assigned to them. The GAL serves as an investigator, a link, a facilitator, an advocate and a monitor to ensure the judge has the necessary information to make good decisions for all children. Background check mandatory and training provided. RSVP Advisory Council Member (Newport) – seeking people with a sincere commitment to volunteerism and good community awareness, who are concerned about issues involving older citizens. Meetings are only held every two months for about an hour and a half. Rural Community Transportation (RCT-Newport) – needs drivers for the Newport-Derby area. Volunteer drivers transport people of all ages to medical appointments, adult day services, senior meal sites, schools, medical treatments and other necessary activities. Drivers are reimbursed at 50.5 cents per mile, which is non-taxable and paid directly to the volunteer. Need reliable vehicle and insurance; license check and criminal background check provided. Brighton (Island Pond), Brownington, Charleston & Irasburg Elementary Schools – are seeking volunteers to help and mentor students within the school system.
